SABYASACHI MUKHERJEE

In April 2023, Sunhil embarked on a unique and somewhat enigmatic journey with renowned Indian designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee. What began as quiet, fly-on-the-wall imagery at Sabyasachi’s flagship store in Mumbai soon evolved into a deeper, documentarian-archivist role. Over time, he began shadowing Sabyasachi on his travels, capturing moments that reflect the essence of his creative world. This long-term project aims to build a rich visual archive that encapsulates the magic of Sabyasachi’s universe.

Sunhil is sporadically documenting the extraordinary pursuits of Shivendra Singh Dungarpur and The FIlm Heritage Foundation including the construction of the Foundation’s upcoming museum in Mumbai’s Ballard Estate. He was drawn to Dungarpur’s passion, believing in attraction over promotion and his motivation has grown rather organically from making portraits of retired projectionists  to capturing candid portraits of celebrated film-makers.

In 2023, Sunhil collaborated with Simin Patel aka Miss Bombaywalla on her pursuits in documenting little known and unusual establishments around the city of Mumbai. While Sunhil has typically observed the street from the perspective of a candid observer, this gave him the opportunity to explore urban narratives with a little more precision. He also had the opportunity to utilise his seasoned filmmaking skills in creating mini-visual narratives.

SAVITRI WANEY CHARITABLE TRUST

Becoming a trustee of the Savitri Foundation was both an honor and a challenge, but Sunhil’s journey truly began when he visited rural Uttar Pradesh to witness the Foundation’s work in palliative care. Seeing firsthand the suffering in remote villages, where healthcare is almost nonexistent, shifted his perspective from obligation to a deep personal commitment. Later, through his work documenting Akhand Jyoti’s efforts in eradicating curable blindness, he saw how a simple $50 surgery could transform a child’s life.

Recently, Sunhil had the honor of shooting the prestigious 25th-anniversary campaign, marking a significant milestone in their collaboration. His role extends beyond campaigns as he has been working on books that document both Sabyasachi’s craft and the soul of Kolkata itself, weaving the city into the narrative as an equal participant rather than just a backdrop.

The short film he created captures this journey of resilience, hope, and the power of collective goodwill. Working with Savitri has not only been humbling but has also reinforced the belief that true change happens when good people come together for a greater cause.
